tonight, the growing emergency. after the deadliest 24 hours so far. the families reportedly pulled out of their homes and taken to be quarantined as the coronavirus worsens. the deadliest day yet in the 97 dead in 24 hours, and authorities say this could be the tip of the iceberg. at least 23, as hundreds of passengers including americans say they're trapped on board and fear they'll be infected next. also tonight, the deadly shooting at a walmart. a man opening fire, two officers hit. one in surgery tonight. in new york city, the mayor calling it an assassination attempt on the police. two officers shot in two separate locations. the surveillance showing a man entering a precinct and opening fire in all directions.

the new poll just out tonight on the eve of the new hampshire primary. the national poll shows a shakeup at the top. who has the momentum? as bernie sanders, joe biden, pete buttigieg and elizabeth warren barnstorm the state. and amy klobuchar looks to capitalize on her debate night. damaging winds, heavy rains, flash flood alerts from texas through the carolinas that system stretching all the way into the northeast. the justice department tonight saying the chinese military stole personal information of tens of millions of americans. and the new and emotional message just in tonight from kobe bryant's wife, what she's now saying about the daughter she lost. good evening, great to have you with us to start a new week.

we begin tonight with that growing coronavirus emergency. 97 new deaths reported in just one day. troubling new images from chinese social media showing a couple being dragged away for reportedly refusing to self-quarantine. thousands of passengers trapped on the ship, fearing they'll be infected next. tonight, the world health organization saying they fear more than the 40,000 reported cases may just be the tip of the iceberg. abc's maggie rulli leads us off from japan tonight. >> reporter: these chilling images now emerging on chinese social media showing the drastic steps taken to try to stop the spread of that virus. quarantine teams seen dragging a couple from their apartment after they reportedly refused to self-quarantine. and tonight, this self-described citizen journalist who has defied the chinese government to report on the shortages of masks

and protective clothing has not been heard from in days. the virus has now sickened over 40,000 and killed 910 people including the first american, a 60-year-old man in wuhan. over the last 24 hours nearly 100 people died, its deadliest day. overnight, the cases aboard that quarantined cruise ship off japan doubling to 135. at least 23 of those infect ready americans including rebecca frasure from oregon who's still hospitalized. >> it doesn't even feel like a cold. to be perfectly honest, i wouldn't have known that there was anything wrong with me if they hadn't tested me. >> reporter: her husband tested negative, but is stuck on ship for eight more days along with 3,700 others as more passengers get sick. >> it's scary hearing the numbers increase. >> reporter: newlyweds gaetano cerullo and his wife milnea fear they could be next. >> it's making us think like us being on here, we're just prone to this scenario to happen. >> reporter: despite the worries

onboard, the cdc says there's no everyday that the virus can spread through the ship's ventilation. president xi jinping making a visit to a health center in beijing. wearing a mask. president trump said he had a long talk with the chinese president. >> i had a long talk with president xi two nights ago, he feels very confident. in the april, generally speaking the heat kills this virus. but we're in great shape in our country. >> maggie joins us from japan. we just heard from president trump saying we can expect to see the virus at least to start go away in the spring the warmer temperatures, what are health authorities saying about that tonight. >> reporter: that's the hope, david. health experts say respiratory illnesses, start to go away in the warmer weather, but this is a new virus. experts caution say we don't know how it spreads.

david. >> maggie, thank you. we turn next monday night to the deadly shoot-out at a walmart in arkansas. police called to the scene for a man making threats. hire's abc's steve osunsami tonight. >> reporter: federal firearm agents, arkansas state police and other investigators are working the crime scene tonight at this walmart, halfway between little rock and memphis. >> advising there are gunshots inside of walmart. >> reporter: around 10:00 a.m., witnesses say a man with a gun was "talking out of his head and making threats." >> it was just gunshots and everybody started running. >> reporter: two officers got there quickly. >> officers engaged the suspect, the suspect is deceased. >> reporter: before the gunman was killed, police say he shot both officers. >> we have an officer down at this time. >> reporter: lieutenant eric varner, a 17-year veteran was treated and released. detective eugene watlington is in surgery, but expected to be okay, neither was wearing a bulletproof vest.

>> with their quick response, many lives again were saved today. >> reporter: in november, a gunman killed two people in this oklahoma walmart parking lot. in august, 22 people were killed at this walmart in el paso. the company has since added armed guards to all its stores in that city. it's not clear tonight if walmart had extra security measures in place at this store in arkansas. david. >> all right, steve, thank you. here in new york city officials are calling it an assassination attempt. tonight's surveillance showing that shooter walking into a police precinct and wounding one officer. here's abc's gio benitez tonight. >> reporter: this is the chilling surveillance video. the gunman calmly walking into this bronx police precinct on sunday morning. moments later drawing his gun. an officer ducks for cover as gunfire rings out. the suspect runs into another room, emptying his entire clip. striking a lieutenant in the arm and then dropping to the ground,

his gun flying across the floor. more than a dozen officers swarmed the suspect, one punching him repeatedly. >> i will point out that this coward immediately laid down, but only after he ran out of bullets. >> reporter: saturday night, police say this surveillance video shows the same gunman approaching a police van, shoot one in the neck. >> this was an attempt to assassinate police officers. we need to use that word. >> reporter: tonight, robert williams standing before a judge. his face beaten. the d.a. saying he confessed to both crimes and even threatened to do it again. both officers now out of the hospital. one of them, jose gatreaux was applauded as he stood up from his wheelchair. david, robert williams was convicted of attempted murder in 2002, paroled in 2017. now, he faces 12 more counts of attempted murder. he's pleaded not guilty. david? >> gio, thank you. now to the race for 2020.

a new national poll out on the eve of the new hampshire primary. in the poll, bernie sanders now in the lead for the democrats nationally. amy klobuchar is hoping to capitalize on her debate performance. abc's mary bruce from massachusetts tonight. >> reporter: tonight, bernie sanders confident a win is in sight. [ applause ] >> if we win tomorrow, i think we have a path to victory to the democratic nomination. >> reporter: the senator from neighboring vermont turning up the heat on two of his rivals. >> one of the things that differentiates our campaign from other campaigns, my friend mr. buttigieg and my fried joe biden, they have dozens and dozens of billionaires contributing to their campaigns. >> reporter: sanders well aware that pete buttigieg is riding a wave of momentum out of iowa. >> you mentioned bernie sanders and only bernie sanders,

do you see this as a two person race now, and does that help you? >> well, i certainly think there's a very clear contrast between my approach and my friend senator sanders' approach. he's talking about either a revolution and a status quo and there's nothing in between. >> reporter: buttigieg is also fending off attacks from joe biden in the fight for moderate voters. >> this guy is not a barack obama! >> well, he's right. i'm not barack obama and neither he is. neither is anyone running for president right now and this isn't 2008, it's 2020. >> reporter: biden has already predicted a poor showing in new hampshire, but he's still trying to fight for every vote. >> i'm joe. >> i know you're joe. >> reporter: and so is elizabeth warren who needs a strong finish here to move forward. today warren trying to change minds at the sweet maple café. >> i'm still on the fence. so, what are you gonna say to change my mind? >> wow. >> reporter: one campaign is

accusing the chinese military of being behind perhaps the biggest hack of americans ever. the fbi claiming today that these four members of china's people's liberation army were responsible for the 2017 breach of equifax, one of the nation's biggest credit reporting agencies. >> the scale of the theft was staggering. >> reporter: the theft included the names, dates of birth, and social security numbers of nearly half the population. also stolen, the driver's license numbers of at least 10 million americans. the attorney saying the hack imposed substantial cost and burdens to the victims. >> they have had to take measures to protect against identity theft. >> reporter: and beyond the massive privacy breach, authorities said the computer attack is a part of broader plan by china to commit economic espionage. >> pierre is live in washington important attorney general barr making another headline today, saying that he'll accept information about ukraine from president trump's personal
